Spiral shaped when viewed end-on, Coiled Roll Pins have several windings or layers of material, much like a Swiss roll. The layering gives the coiled spring pins their strength. The thickness of metal involved is typically thinner than that used in slotted spring pins. The tension or load placed on a coiled spring pin is spread out over all the layers of the pin. They are formed from spring steel.
Coiled pins really begin to distinguish themselves during installation. As a coiled pin is pressed into a hole, the coils absorb the compression from the outer wrap to the inner wrap and equally distribute stresses throughout the pin. Coiled pins continue to flex after they are installed and when a load is applied. Coiled roll pins can be installed without regard to the direction of the applied load because the 2.25 coil wrap absorbs shock and vibration. The coiled spring pin offers greater radial contact as there is a minimum of 270° of contact in the hole. This increased contact contributes to better load distribution and decreases the potential for hole damage – especially when the hole is in soft or thin material or close to the edge of the application. Coiled roll pins allow for wider hole tolerances and conform better to out of round and tapered holes.
